About Chairman

Bandi Rama Krishna, popularly known as RK was born in 1964 to Bandi Venkateswara Rao and Bapanamma in Alapadu, a village bordering Krishna and West Godavari Districts. With 3 elder sisters and an elder brother(Bandi Satyanarayana Garu), RK was the youngest of 7 and grew in a middle-class farming community.

Tough Times

In 1972, like most farmers, losing his crops after successive years to either drought or floods, his father Bandi Venkateswara Rao was economically broke to the point of famine. During then, RK’s brother Satyanarayana had been studying at The Hindu College in Machilipatnam for his Pre-University Course and was on his way to pursue Medicine. However, forced by circumstances, he forsook his goals of higher education and started working in a Canteen to support himself and the family.

Humble beginnings and training

After working for a year, in 1973, at the age of 19, he started a small food cart selling savory breakfast foods along with chai and coffee. After a few years, the rest of the family moved to Machilipatnam to join him to support the humble yet thriving business. RK was only about 9 years old then; burdened with the challenging circumstances at home, he was forced to drop out of school and discontinued schooling after 5th grade. Starting from a young age, he was gifted with the ability to quickly learn and master delicious savory breakfast foods. Despite the gruesome hard work that a quick-service food business demands, he has always held his cheerful attitude. A few years later, he was joined by 3 of his nephews who were also about the same age. The family lived and worked together. By offering delicious food made with pure and fresh raw materials at reasonable prices, the business thrived slowly but eventually.

Charting out his own path

After almost a decade of working hard and learning the tactics of cooking, raw material sourcing, and procurement, as a young adult seeking independence, he decided to create a path for himself and started a small cafeteria/canteen at The Hindu College in 1983 offering delicious mid-day meals at student-friendly prices. The business soon became a hit and was loved by many students, garnering praise. Noticing that a lot of former students of the college still loving the meals, he decided to open his business to a wider, and more generic market. After carefully saving every penny of the profits and investing them in a savings account for almost a decade, he bought a piece of land and started a canteen providing mid-day and evening meals and that’s how the now-famous RK Mess was born in 1987.
